antique inspiration

As soon as I have room for it, I will inherit a gorgeous antique caned settee that was my Great Grandmother Kate's.
The last time it got re-upholstered was in 1984, the year I was born so it is in dire need of a little makeover.
It is a beautiful antique piece and I love the sense of history behind it.

Last week I spotted this lovely vintage loveseat from Jayson home & Garden and I
instantly fell in love with the concept and decided this would be the perfect inspiration for my antique piece.
I think that combination of pumpkin orange and emerald green is just so striking.

Do you have any family heirloom pieces that you've recently spruced up? If so I'd love to see them!

  1. I love the inspiration loveseat; it's beautiful. My great grandmother had a settee in a similar style at her house. After she died some people were paid to go into her house and clean it out and the settee was trashed. In their defense, it had never been reupholstered so it was covered in a green velvet that had tears and huge worn spots, and it was missing a leg. But I'm still kicking myself for not going in there and rescuing it; with a little (lot) of love it could have been beautiful!

  3. I can't wait to see your piece in its refinished glory! I think family heirlooms are the best pieces---they actually mean something, and they help add an element of style that can't be scripted by big-box furniture.

  4. I couldn't help but think of the amazing vintage crewel upholstered settee I saw last weekend...at The Salvation Army store, of all places. It was in perfect condition and even though I'm pretty skeeved by "used" upholstery, I wouldve made an exception if I'd had the space! I love the combo of the piece you've shown here!!

  5. My husband and I met and got married at the Hotel Jerome in Aspen. The hotel opened in the 1880's and is full of antiques. We got these chairs from the hotel shortly after getting married and I just redid them (13 years later!). I think you can see the before and after pics here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2119635&id=1193673152&l=e9ff41da61.

  7. Oh I soooo wish I had an antique piece from my Gramme that I could recover...but all I have are memories and some jewelry. How lucky you are! Thanks for the visual candy, that fabric is to die for. Good mix.

  8. Oh love it.
I inherited a couch and chair from my grandmother. It looks a lot like the one in your post. My grandma recovered it, I think in the early 90's in the current color. Maybe someday I'll recover it, or get around to painting the legs. Here is the link. http://greenzone-dag.blogspot.com/2010/07/finally-finished.html

  13. Love that Jayson settee and their Company.
I recently redid a couple of my late Mother-in-law's chairs....one of the chairs has a white cushion seat...but I'm in the process of having a new seat cushion made from an antique French grain sack. I'll post the new cushion soon....but here's the original article :

  19. Based on my experience, it's not worth this. Neat! Most specialists don't know where to begin when it is on par with cosmetics. I'm sure there's a logical explanation for cosmetics and that is so that you can actually have your cake and to eat it as well. I do gather that might be further optimized.
